An American actress by the name of Raquel Welch. She gained notoriety for her part in Fantastic Voyage initially, and as a result, 20th Century Fox offered her a contract. Raquel Tejada was born Welch on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, the daughter of a Bolivian-born father and an American mother. Her family relocated to La Jolla, California, outside of San Diego while she was still a toddler so that her father could pursue his engineering career at General Dynamics Corporation.

Although she formerly had an IQ of 140, she had little interest in furthering her education.

She began attending San Diego State College on a scholarship in 1958 with a focus on theater arts and wed her first husband, James Welch, the following year. Damon Welch (born in 1959), who later worked as an actor and production assistant, and actress Tahnee Welch were their two children (born in 1961). Tahnee later used her attractive appearance to her advantage as an actor, most notably with her lead part in Cocoon (1985).

Raquel left college and finally worked as a local TV weather girl in San Diego. She relocated to Dallas, Texas, with her two children when her marriage ended in 1962 (she and Welch didn’t get divorced until 1964), where she worked as a barmaid and modeled for Neiman Marcus.

After regaining her composure, she went back to California (Los Angeles) to attend film and television auditions. She was hired for small-scale but seductive set decoration for Bewitched (1964), McHale’s Navy (1962), and The Virginian (1962), as well as for big-budget films like Roustabout (1964) and Do Not Disturb (1965) starring Doris Day. A Swingin’ Summer (1965), which focused more on musical guests The Righteous Brothers and Gary Lewis & The Playboys than on Raquel’s standout qualities, was her first significant film appearance. Caught up in the “beach party” frenzy, this is not surprising. But 20th Century Fox definitely paid attention and hired her.

Raquel was divorced four times. Her three new spouses were pizza shop owner Richie Palmer, who is 14 years younger than she is, and producer/agent Patrick Curtis, who produced her TV special Raquel (1970). Raquel made the most of her modest singing and dancing skills by appearing in flashy Las Vegas showroom acts and playing the lead in stage productions like “Woman of the Year” and “Victor/Victoria,” which were both viable choices. Raquel, who is approaching 70 and is still a stunner, keeps popping up here and there and never fails to turn heads.
