She is the daughter of Joseph Ripa, the Democratic County Clerk for Camden County, and Esther Ripa, a housewife. Her sister Linda is a children’s book author. The sisters were brought up by Roman Catholic parents. The first actor in her family, Kelly, is a pioneer in the field. As a young girl, she learned piano and dance.
She was encouraged to pursue an acting career by her drama instructor at Eastern Regional High School in New Jersey while she was a student there. Before departing to pursue acting in New York City, she took part in regional theater productions as a lead actress and enrolled at Camden County College.
