The success of Stapleton took a while to materialize. He is a Kentucky native who was raised in the tiny town of Staffordsville after being born in Lexington. He came to Nashville in 2001 in an effort to break into the country music industry. After agreeing to a publishing deal with Sea Gayle Music, he began to work steadily, writing songs, working odd jobs to pay the expenses, and playing music throughout. He founded the SteelDrivers in 2008, a bluegrass band that enjoyed considerable success over the ensuing two years.
Chris Stapleton Awards
The trio was given the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2009, and the following year they were nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best Bluegrass Album for their album Reckless. Despite their success, Stapleton departed the band in April 2010 and started the Jompson Brothers with Brad McNamee on drums, Greg McKee on guitar, and J.T. Cure on bass. The Southern rock band had disbanded by 2013, and Stapleton had joined Mercury Nashville. In October of the same year, he released “What Are You Listening To?” With co-producer Dave Cobb, he made a new record when the single’s accompanying album was dropped due to its lack of success. This is the record from which his solo career, Traveller, was born.
Stapleton and Morgane Hayes first crossed paths in 2003 while they were both writing songs in nearby buildings. In an effort to run into her pal, Morgane would stop by Sea Gayle Music. He proposed writing a song with her after a few months.
